The first total solar eclipse in almost a century to span the U.S. from coast to coast came and went Monday afternoon.
And cloudy skies meant there wasn’t a whole lot to see in St. Cloud.
While many area residents traveled to get a better view from another state, students and faculty at St. Cloud State University gathered on the Atwood Mall for a viewing party called Eclipse: Fun Without the Sun.
The free eclipse viewing glasses being handed out were not needed here, but the donut holes dubbed “moon rocks” were a hit.
“I really didn’t know too much about it, and I was hoping to see what it was all about,” said Melissa Newton, a junior. “It kinda stinks the weather played out like this.”
It was the first total solar eclipse since 1979 in the United States, and the first solar eclipse to cross the contiguous U.S. from coast to coast since 1918, according to NASA. The next solar eclipse in the U.S. will occur in 2024.
