SCSU engineers fly into new territory

If Thursday’s weather cooperates, the whale will fly — theoretically.

Five mechanical engineering students at St. Cloud State University have worked since September to design and build a roughly 12-pound aircraft for a senior project. One of the team members dubbed the plane early in the construction process. A black plastic casing covers the frame save for a white undercarriage. With wings unattached, the fuselage looks like a black whale.

Thursday will mark the team’s first airborne trial — a critical step for the group who are still new to aerospace engineering.
