Runestad graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and mathematics from Concordia College, received a Master of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a Doctorate of Education in Higher Education Administration from St. Cloud State University.
