Stillwater Gazette — Many hope to leave a legacy in their field, but not all succeed. Those who have a significant impact in their positions hope it continues and is built upon for generations to come. Stillwater High School music director George Regis ’39 left such a legacy.
Growing up in Chisholm, Minn., Regis received a big dose of music because his uncle was the music director at the Chisholm High School and his father was also a musician. Regis started playing the trumpet at age 5, and by the time he reached seventh grade he could play five instruments.
Graduating from St. Cloud State in 1939 and later receiving his master’s degree from the College of St. Thomas, he had his first teaching position in Mantorville, Minn., in 1940. He went into the service and was an instructor in the U.S. Army’s school of music. When he got out of the Army, he worked at Hastings High School before arriving at Stillwater in 1949.
