St. Cloud State University’s Information Technology Security program fought off cyber-attacks and took home third place at the 2016 Midwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition at Moraine Valley Community College in Moraine Valley, Illinois, April 1-2.
The Huskies defeated teams from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.
The day and a half long regional competition also gives students the opportunity to meet with sponsors to discuss future employment opportunities.
“St. Cloud State has well-established Information Technology Security and Information Assurance programs that prepare students for taking up challenging roles in Cyber Security, both in industry and with the government,” said Tirthankar Ghosh, director of the Information Technology Security program.
This is the team’s highest finish since winning the regional competition in 2012.
“The students are focused, know what they are doing and should be able to learn from their mistakes to do better next year,” Ghosh said.
St. Cloud State’s Information Technology Security program teaches students to assess the security needs of a computer and network system, recommend safeguards and manage the implementation and maintenance of security devices, systems and procedures to protect it. Student collaboration is encouraged with faculty researching artificial intelligence, software engineering networking, parallel computing, operating systems, distributed computing, graphics, databases, numerical computing, computer architecture and security.
