The conference is designed as an opportunity for law enforcement officers, law enforcement and social services experts and community stakeholders from throughout the Midwest to engage in a conversation about how to improve police/community relationships and build partnerships between police officers and social service providers to better serve the public.
The conference theme “Strengthening Communities: Collaborative Strategies by Police Departments and Community Partners” focuses on how police and community partners can work together for a stronger community. The conference is 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Holiday Inn & Suites, 75 S. 37th Ave., St. Cloud.
The conference features keynote speaker George T. Patterson, an associate professor at Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College in New York.
His recent work includes a written testimony on stress management interventions included in the Officer Wellness and Safety manual presented to the May 2015 Final Report of the Task Force on 21st Century Policing established by President Barack Obama.
Conference topics will focus on collaborative strategies, community policing, strengthening community trust and collaboration with police, psychological first aid for first responders and strengthening relationships through community policing houses.
The conference is being organized by assistant professors of social work Sylvester Amara Lamin and Consoler T. Teboh in collaboration with the university’s Center for Continuing Studies and the St. Cloud CAPS team.
