Molson will show “Pop Foul,” “Crazy Beats Strong Every Time” and “The Bravest, The Boldest” which he directed, along with “Advantageous,” a short film he produced in 2015. The screenings will be followed by a question and answer session.
The first three short films look at family relationships, while “Advantageous” is a futuristic, sci-fi drama.
All three of Molson’s films were shown at Sundance, were screened at more than 250 international film festivals and won more than 100 awards worldwide, including grand jury prizes at Palm Springs, South by Southwest and the Student Academy Award.
“We are bringing in Moon because he’s an accomplished filmmaker and has extensive experience with making and promoting short films,” said Ilya Simakov, assistant professor of film studies. “… His filmmaking practice may also be of interest to those who see film as an art form or a vehicle for social change.”
In addition to showing his films and answering questions, Molson will lead a master class for St. Cloud State film students on his film making process 1-5 p.m. Sept. 30 in the Miller Center auditorium.
Molson is an assistant professor of film and media arts at Temple University in Philadelphia and is the filmmaker in residence at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.
“The screening is an opportunity for the community to not only see some great short films, but to have an interaction with an established independent filmmaker, whose work is emotionally and intellectually provocative,” Simakov said.
Molson’s visit is the third event in the School of the Arts’ 2016-17 Creative Art Series. The 11 events in the third-annual series are designed to expand students’ experiences and the public’s perspectives by introducing them to new concepts and perceptions in the School of the Arts four disciplines — art, film, theater and music.
