Performed in Spanish and English with projected translations, “Corazón Eterno” (Always in My Heart) is a “poetic, romantic adventure of love ignited, denied, rekindled, rejected, and renewed; of love pragmatic and impossible, temporal and eternal; and ultimately of love transforming the human experience.”
“Corazón Eterno” is inspired by “Love in the Time of Cholera,” a novel written by the late Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Márquez.
It was written by Caridad Svich, 53, who in 2012 was honored with an Obie Award for lifetime achievement. The Obies are given annually by the Village Voice to honor artists and theater groups associated with Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions in New York City.
The play will be performed by actors from Minneapolis-based Mixed Blood Theatre Company. The director is José Zayas, a Harvard and Carnegie Mellon graduate who acts and directs.
The 90-minute play is presented free, thanks to these St. Cloud State entities: Multicultural Student Services, University Program Board, Admissions, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán, Residence Hall Association and the Social Justice Committee.
Parking is $1.50 an hour in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp.
Attendees are invited to view Día de Los Muertos altars on the 2nd floor of Atwood Center. Known in English as Day of the Dead, the holiday is celebrated in Mexico and among some Mexican-Americans.
Regional touring performances of “Corazón Eterno” are funded in part by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
The play will be mounted at Mixed Blood Theatre in February.
