Coaching legend versus emerging star. Hockey East versus NCHC. Top 15 team versus Top 5 team. And — Halloween costumes.

No. 3 men’s Huskies Hockey hosts No. 13 Boston College in a showdown of season-defining significance Oct. 20-21 at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

In his 46th year of head coaching, Boston College’s Jerry York, 72, is the winningest bench boss in NCAA ice hockey history with a 1034-615-115 record and five national championships.

Bob Motzko ’89 is one of the hottest names in hockey, with two league titles, seven national tournament appearances, a Frozen Four berth and a gold medal at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championships.

Motzko’s undefeated World Juniors run — that included two wins each over Canada and Russia — earned the 56-year-old a return gig leading the under-20 squad Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Buffalo.

This weekend’s series also highlights the rivalry between top college hockey conferences whose teams have earned 13 Frozen Four berths since 2013.

St. Cloud State (3-0-0) started fast against a pair of non-conference opponents, Minnesota State Mankato and Alaska Fairbanks. The Huskies have the nation’s second-most productive offense, averaging five goals a game.

Boston College (1-1-1) dropped a 5-2 contest to No. 10 Wisconsin, tied No. 14 Quinnipiac and defeated No. 9 Providence 4-3 in overtime. The Eagles are 10-for-10 on the penalty kill, one of just five NCAA D-I teams to not give up a power play goal.

Friday’s 7:37 game is telecast locally by Husky Productions on Spectrum channels 426 and 823. The radio broadcast is on 96.7 FM The River.

Saturday’s 7:07 game includes a Halloween costume contest. It’s a Husky Productions telecast carried on FOX Sports North Plus and FOX College Sports. The radio broadcast is on 96.7 FM The River.
