Professor of Economics Mónica García-Pérez has been named 2019 president-elect of the American Society of Hispanic Economists (ASHE). She will serve as president-elect in 2019, president in 2020, and as past-president in 2021.
During her tenure as president, García-Pérez hopes to strengthen the relations between ASHE and other similar associations, focusing on improving the working environment among minorities and women in the profession of economics.
ASHE is a professional association of economists who are concerned with the under-representation of Hispanic Americans in the economics profession at a time when Hispanics represent over 16 percent of the United States’ population.
García-Pérez has been a professor of economics at St. Cloud State since 2009 and serves as co-director of the SCSU Survey Center and is the Director of the SCSU Faculty Research Group on Immigrant Workers in Minnesota. Her research focuses on topics of labor economics, immigration, and health economics.
García-Pérez’s research and partnership with CentraCare in recent years sparked the development of the Center for Health Outcome Policy Research (CHOPR).
