Professors Mikhail Blinnikov (Geography) and Jason Lindsey (Political Science) teamed up to present on the current state of the nuclear arms race between the United States and Russia.
Lindsey, who specializes in the politics of Russia and Eastern Europe, recently attended a conference in Russia where a number of presenters talked about a modern-day cold war. He touched on the history of nuclear weapons and the long-lasting effect the use of nuclear weapons in the 1940s still has today.
Born and raised in Russia, Blinnikov sees the irrational thinking and instability of Russian and American leadership as a cause to be concerned. “We are worried, so we wanted to share that with you,” he said.
To illustrate the severity of the use of nuclear weaponry in today’s world, Blinnikov recommended a Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security video titled Plan A, a recently released and plausible simulation of an escalation between the United States and Russia and the casualties from it.
Professors Blinnikov and Lindsey answered questions and engaged in a discussion following their presentation.
