St. Cloud State University’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education (CHGE) has several events lined up for Spring 2023 available for students, faculty and staff, and members of the community.
The first event is the annual commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz on Jan. 27, a date the United Nations has designated as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Leading up to and around that date, St. Cloud State has initiated an annual lecture series entitled The Scott and Lynn Bryce Lecture on Holocaust Education, a series intended to commemorate the lives of the victims of the Holocaust and to honor the roles of the two professors who were the founders of Holocaust education at St. Cloud State. Each year. an individual is invited to speak on the topic of education about the lessons and the legacies of the Holocaust.
This year, CHGE has partnered with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) and Twin Cities PBS to bring a unique program to Central Minnesota. St. Cloud State will host an exclusive screening of the 2022 Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Sarah Botstein documentary series The U.S. and The Holocaust on campus in both English and Spanish throughout Jan. and Feb.
“We are excited about the opportunity to partner with both JCRC and Twin Cities PBS to bring a unique programming opportunity to St. Cloud State University and our greater community,” said Dr. Juli Stone Pitzer, Interim Director of CHGE. “SCSU is the second pilot in the State of Minnesota to engage with both the new documentary film series as well as host an event with both organizations to talk about the series and relevant and important topics of the Holocaust and Jewish community that need more open discussion today.”
Screenings in English will occur on Jan. 23, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6, while Spanish screenings will run Jan. 24, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7. All film screenings will be shown in the Atwood Theatre starting at 6 p.m. and are free to members of campus and the public. These screenings will lead up to the annual Scott and Lynn Bryce Lecture on Holocaust Education at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Miller Center Auditorium. Ticket registration is required for the lecture only.
Holocaust Remembrance Day features a conversation with two special speakers: Steve Hunegs, Executive Director of JCRC, and Rebecca Erbelding, historian and curator at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. and interview participant in the documentary series. Guests are encouraged to watch the full 3 episodes of “The US and the Holocaust” before attending the conversation. A moderated Q&A will follow.
On March 28, CHGE will join JCRC for the annual trip to tour the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. Registration is limited this year to 19 guests from St. Cloud State and our greater community. Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] for details on how to enroll.
