KVSC broadcasters see strong support from SCSU fans

St. Cloud State University hockey fans are a passionate pack.

And thanks to their generous efforts, SCSU student broadcasters had another chance to head on the road to cover the Huskies at the NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament, where SCSU opened up play against Minnesota State-Mankato on March 23 and later faced the University of Minnesota in the Regional Final on March 25 in Fargo, North Dakota.

“We’ve been infiltrating SCSU Hockey Twitter and made a lot of friends there,” KVSC 88.1 FM play-by-play broadcaster Alex Fern said. “We knew Huskies fans are some of the best when it comes to college hockey, but we were surprised how willing people were to give.”

“It took off; it’s more money than we thought.”

A GoFundMe titled “Help KVSC get to the NCAA Regionals!” raised $3,800 with 53 donations over a week-long span, blowing past their initial $2,500 goal in only 16 hours.

Donations were used to cover the travel expenses for broadcasters, with any money not used going into the KVSC sports fund to help provide for future broadcast trips. The station also covers Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, Wrestling, Women’s Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball and Softball.

The group flew past last year’s total of $2,100 that was raised over multiple weeks. The steady string of donations has shown the value the station provides to the community.

“It speaks to the hockey fans, alumni and connections that have been built over the years,” KVSC Station Manager Jo McMullen-Boyer said. “It’s a boost of confidence that they have that support from listeners.”

Fern was joined by broadcaster Brian Moos and ice-side reporter Zac Chapman for the Regional Tournament.
