St. Cloud State University’s Student Accessibility Services welcomes SCSU students, faculty and staff and the surrounding community to join in celebration of Disability & Access Week from Oct. 9-13.
In solidarity with the disabled community, SCSU and Student Accessibility Services is hosting multiple events on campus during the week while promoting our commitment of being inclusive and accessible University through inclusive practices, language and attitudes that honors and values everyone.
Events during Disability & Access Week begin Oct. 9 with a Commit to Access event from 9-11 a.m. in Centennial Hall. Anyone who attends can sign a commitment banner, connect with others, receive Disability & Access Week 2023 buttons and more. That evening from 6-9 p.m., SCSU Esports is hosting Smash Bros Weekly, offering those interested in esports to come enjoy this weekly gaming event in the Huskies Esports Arena while learning more about clubs at SCSU and enjoying free prizes, food and more.
On Oct. 10, the award-winning documentary “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution” will be shown in the Atwood Theatre starting at 2:30 p.m. followed by a facilitated discussion about the film.
Activities resume Oct. 11 with a full day of activities starting with Student Accessibility Services 101 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the Atwood Glacier North room to learn more about the inner workings of Student Accessibility Services. Later that day, Student Accessibility Services will host Advancing Your Accessible Mindset, an interactive session centered on the concept of creating an inclusive and accessible University for everyone. To round out the day on Oct. 11, Paint With DREAM will be held in the Atwood Gallery from 3-4:30 p.m., offering the chance to create community and express experiences through painting with SCSU DREAM (Disability Rights, Education, Activism and Mentoring), a new student organization at SCSU.
On Oct. 12, Dr. Amanda Kraus from the University of Arizona will deliver a virtual keynote address from 10-11:30 a.m. discussing concepts of ableism while exploring the power of design to increase inclusion without compromising quality.
To round out Disability & Access Week on Oct. 13, a Coffee, Tea, Accessibility event will be held from 9-11 a.m. in Miller Center 218 to enjoy refreshments and conversation about the events over the week, have conversation with others about access conundrums, learn how to use tools that increase access for all, and more.
