A new exhibit “Filled with Scarcity” opens Nov. 6 in the Kiehle Gallery on the St. Cloud State University campus.
The exhibit runs through Dec. 7 and is the first Minnesota solo exhibition by artist Sarah Marshall. Marshall explores the gulf between two experiences in the world — one presented daily to the senses and the other an unseen collection of belief, imagination and memory.
These experiences are positioned together not to resolve them, but to consider the relationship between them. Marshall aims to make visible the invisible — the spaces between objects and events and our awkwardness in describing them are the ultimate subject.
Marshall’s prints and drawings reference the physical world through plant forms, animal forms and the figure. Manipulated text, language and translation suggest the complexities of human thought and behavior. Marshall cuts apart and recombines source images, abstracting them through simplification, repetition and layering. Layers may contradict each other or work together, linking the internal and external worlds.
SCSU’s Department of Art will hold an opening reception in the gallery from 1-3 p.m. on Nov. 6. Marshall will give an artist talk in the gallery beginning at 1:15 p.m. during the reception and the talk is open to the public.
Marshall received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University and her Master’s of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Marshall is currently a professor of art at the University of Alabama and has participated in workshops and residencies at the Taller de Gráfica Experimental de La Habana, the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium, Tamarind Institute, Penland School of Craft, and Arrowmont School of Art and Craft. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in public and private collections across the United States.
The Kiehle Gallery is located in the Kiehle Visual Arts Center on the campus of St. Cloud State. The gallery hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
