St. Cloud State University will celebrate its first-generation college students, faculty and staff on Nov. 8.
F1rst-Generation College Celebration Day will be held from 11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. in the Atwood Memorial Center Alumni Room. It is part of a annual, national effort to raise awareness for first-generation college students and their experiences. First-generation students are individuals whose parents did not receive a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
“The First Generation Student Celebration aims to celebrate our first-generation students, faculty and staff and to foster a supportive community that embraces first-generation identity and cultivates a mentoring and relational culture,” said Dr. Feng-Ling Johnson, Dean of University College.
Attendees can connect with other first-generation students, faculty and staff, learn about campus resources and show their pride in being first generation at SCSU. Students who attend the event will be entered to win a $200 gift card to the Husky Bookstore.
A F1rst-Gen Student Voice Panel will be held afterwards from 1-2 p.m. at Voyageurs North in Atwood. It’s a chance to hear first-generation experiences and learn how to best support them.
Another method of support is joining the SCSU F1rst Gen Faculty/Staff Directory. This aims to build a community of support for First-Generation Huskies. Fill out a brief survey prior to Nov. 6 to be included.
