St. Cloud State University’s student-run radio station KVSC has been nominated for the 2024 National Student Production Awards.
KVSC is one of four finalists in the audio division for best sports play-by-play. Their submission is from the third period of the SCSU Men’s Hockey game against rival North Dakota on Jan. 20, 2024, where the Huskies went on to record a shootout win after a 3-3 tie.
Brian Moos, a senior Mass Communications major, was on play-by-play for the game. He spent plenty of time finding the perfect 10-minute clip to submit.
“Whenever North Dakota comes to town, it’s a big deal,” Moos said. “Those games I think I subconsciously hype myself up a little more; it makes for a more exciting game and a more exciting submission.”
Alex Fern on color commentary, Gavin Nelson as the board operator and Zac Chapman as the ice side reporter were all also featured in the clip. After North Dakota scored off a defender’s skate early in the period, a goal from Veeti Miettinen brought Herb Brooks National Hockey Center to its feet for a thrilling opening five-minute stretch of play.
Hundreds of submissions were narrowed down to four finalists in each category based on judging criteria administered by media professionals and student media advisors across the country, according to College Broadcasters, Inc.
“We’re excited that Brian and the station are competing for this award, and we’re especially proud that the nomination is for part of our programming that is so tied to our place at SCSU,” said Dan Seeger, KVSC Station Manager. “The entire sports department at KVSC works so hard on our Husky Hockey broadcasts, and it’s great to see that effort get national recognition.”
Moos will travel to the National Student Media Convention in Seattle this week, where award winners will be announced on Oct. 26.
“I’m really excited to meet a lot of the big players in student and public media,” Moos said. “There will be people from all walks of life and different universities out there, and also members of academia who are in leadership roles at stations.”
