Alumna named finalist for chapbook contest

St. Cloud State University alumna Carissa Baconguis has had a manuscript nominated as a finalist for a chapbook contest from Nine Syllables Press.

A chapbook is a collection that is about 20-40 pages. Baconguis’ book of poetry, “Sacred and Perishable”, is a collection that discusses the body as a medium of horror, and how these horrors can continue to explore the intersections of cultural identity, gender, sexuality, and trauma.

It follows the fictional narrative of the friendship between Dian, a medical student, and Carlos, a shapeshifter.

“I’m honored to know that my work is being read by fellow poets and poetry enthusiasts,” Baconguis said. “I am so thankful for this opportunity and am excited for where it takes me next.”

Baconguis graduated from SCSU last year with a master’s degree in English and wrote “Sacred and Perishable” while still a student under the creative supervision of professors Dr. Sarah Green, Dr. Judith Dorn and Dr. Jaya Jacobo.

“Contests are a main way that poets gain publication; Carissa’s recognition at this stage speaks of her work’s ability to engage strangers and stand out from a large number of hopefuls,” Green said. “The creative writing program is proud to have Carissa as a recent graduate.”

Winners for the chapbook contest will be announced in February.
