St. Cloud State University hosted an open house for a brand-new community space in the James W. Miller Learning Resources Center on June 4.
The Creativity Commons will offer the local community free access to a wide range of digitization equipment, creative tools and crafting supplies.
“The Creativity Commons is designed to preserve memories and spark creativity,” said University Library Dean Rhonda Huisman. “Residents can digitize and preserve treasured memories or dive into new creative projects with an abundance of equipment and resources.”
Numerous digitation services are available, including converting VHS tapes, audio cassettes, 8mm movie reels and more to digital files. There are also audio and video studios available to record high-quality projects with lighting, microphones and a camera setup. Other hands-on creative options include scrapbooking supplies, knitting and crocheting kits, yarn and origami.
Open house attendees on June 4 were able to explore the available equipment, work on a make-and-take craft and discover how the Creativity Commons can support their personal and professional projects.
“The University Library received an LSTA grant through the State Library and Minnesota Department of Education for some of the equipment, staffing and supplies for the Creativity Commons,” Huisman added. “We are always looking for new partners or ideas to support lifelong learning for the SCSU campus and community.”
Any Minnesota resident over the age of 18 can access additional library resources by registering for a University community patron library card.
Summer hours for the Creativity Commons are Monday through Friday from 1-4:15 p.m. or by appointment.
