St. Cloud State University’s applied behavior analysis (ABA) programs have been recognized as top-tier training programs by the Association for Behavior Analysis International’s (ABAI) Accreditation Board.
Both the on-campus and distance (online) ABA master’s programs have received seven-year accreditation. Seven years is the maximum duration granted by ABAI accreditors, showcasing the program’s commitment to best practices and strong student outcomes.
“It is rare for master’s programs to receive a seven-year accreditation; as of December 2025, only 11 other master’s programs worldwide currently hold seven-year accreditations,” said Dr. Stephen Walker, ABA graduate program director. “Our distance program is currently the only accredited online program with a seven-year accreditation.”
SCSU’s ABA program was established in 1982 and has been accredited by the ABAI since 1999. The programs prepare students to work as behavior analysts who are trained in the science of behavior and ready to serve a variety of client populations, including, but not limited to, those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and developmental disabilities.
Walker, who is in his fourth year at SCSU, said the distance program’s success since launching in 2002 stems from small class sizes taught by engaged, full-time faculty.
“The distance program enrolls no more than 25 students each fall. This keeps the class sizes small and allows students to have the same kind of access to faculty as our on-campus students,” Walker said. “The faculty have regularly scheduled meetings with practicum supervisors, and student projects align with agency and client needs. Our students also have a very high pass rate on national board exams.”
The Linda ’74 and Richard Offerdahl Autism Discovery Center provides on-campus experiential learning opportunities for students pursuing careers in autism support, under the direct supervision of licensed doctoral-level and nationally certified behavior analysis faculty.
Campus students also have the opportunity to attend and participate in weekly clinical team meetings with the clinical director, ABA faculty, and other students to receive in-the-moment feedback and direction in evidence-based supports for the clients they serve.
