St. Cloud State University Esports held its fourth annual Northstar IV Tournament Series on Feb. 21.

Over 200 participants from eight states showed their skills in titles like Super Smash Bros., Rocket League and Valorant.

SCSU Esports players and supporting students assisted in hosting the event. The Atwood Ballroom hosted morning matches of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate crew battles, Project+ and Rivals of Aether 2. Smash Ultimate and Smash Melee singles tournaments were held later in the day, with over 16 talented commentators recapping the action on Twitch.

The Huskies Esports Arena hosted a 16-team Rocket League tournament and a 5-team Valorant tournament. Individuals from across the state and other university Rocket League and Valorant teams competed against SCSU Esports players.

Northstar IV also featured a smash sisters event, which was a team crew battle for marginalized genders.

“This iteration of Northstar was the biggest one to date,” said SCSU Director of Esports Justin Bragg. “We’re hoping to have an even bigger event in Spring 2027.”

Another major Esports event comes to campus next month, when SCSU hosts the MNVL State Finals on March 13-14.
