Over 30 students participated in the Huskies Discover Downtown initiative last month, which gave new and returning students an opportunity to explore downtown St. Cloud, discover local businesses and build connections beyond campus.
SCSU student Javelia Morrison-Galimore, a double major in computer science and cybersecurity, organized the event after repeatedly hearing from students that they had to leave St. Cloud to find things to do.
“Some of the best experiences are hiding in plain sight, sometimes just a few blocks from where we study and call home,” Morrison-Galimore said. “This initiative is about challenging that perception and connecting students with local businesses, community resources and experiences. It also provides opportunities to build personal and professional relationships.”
Students represented over 15 countries and had the chance to explore eight different businesses on Oct. 22 and 29. Participating businesses and organizations included Danique, Paramount Gift Gallery, Flat Iron Nutrition, Bella Vita, B-Side Café, Wirth Center, Metz & Co. and MC’s Dugout.
Jaimie Buley, the executive director of the Downtown Alliance, wants downtown St. Cloud to not simply be seen as a place students pass through, but instead as a community they can actively engage with.
“The Downtown Stroll gave students from many countries a chance to meet business owners, explore local shops and experience a personal welcome,” Buley said. “Those connections turn unfamiliar places into places where students feel comfortable returning.”
Staff from SCSU’s Center for International Studies and Multicultural Student Services also accompanied students on their exploration.
“Our partnership with SCSU is important because a strong university and a thriving downtown support one another,” Buley added. “Students bring energy, diverse perspectives and future talent, while downtown offers opportunities to connect, work and build relationships beyond campus. This event was a small but meaningful step toward helping students feel they belong in St. Cloud.”
