“Viva Oromia: Oromo Night 2016” will be held at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Atwood Ballroom.
The event celebrates the festivals of the Oromo homeland and features cultural dances, poetry and an East African Meal.
“There are more than 40,000 Oromos living in Minnesota,” said Solan Tolessa, Oromo Student Organization president. “It’s important to showcase the rich cultural heritage to other communities around us.”
Asmarom Legesse, an anthropologist and author, will be the guest speaker for the event.
The event is open to the public. Tickets are $8 for students with an ID, $10 for non-students and free children 10 and under.
Cultural festivals are one way the university is providing a transformative educational experience for students to help prepare them to be global citizens at home, at work and in their communities. More than 1,000 students from 90-plus nations attend St. Cloud State, and cultural festivals give them an opportunity to share elements of their culture with the campus community.
