Dijkstra’s music draws from the jazz tradition in spirit and sound, but has crossed stylistic and cultural boarders in order to express a strong, evolving personal vision.
Having spent his formative years in Amsterdam’s improvisation community playing jazz, free improvisation and world music and the last 13 years in the United States, Dijkstra has stayed in touch with this Dutch musical roots while deepening his affinity for the experimental forces of American music.
Dijkstra has composed works that incorporate electronic soundtracks and improvisation for commission. He has performed with other improvisational artists and has released 12 CDs as a leader and has performed at several music festivals. He is an associate professor at Berklee College of Music and a faculty member at the New England Conservatory in Boston.
While visiting St. Cloud State, Dijkstra is also working with student composers and performers on the art of composition, improvisation and electronics.
