A talk by Minnesota Vietnam War veteran and author Michael Maurer is the highlight of Veterans’ Voices Month at St. Cloud State University.

Maurer will speak about his novel “Perfume River Nights” as well as his experiences as a veteran at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Miller Center auditorium.
“Perfume River Nights” was published in June and tells the story of an 18 year old soldier’s experiences during the Vietnam War.
Maurer served as a paratrooper in Vietnam in 1968-69 as an infantryman with the 82nd Airborne Division. He lived in Vietnam and other parts of Asia from 2003-12 and now lives in Minnesota.
Other Veterans’ Voices Month events include:
- Veteran Storytellers in the Quarry at noon Oct. 25 in the Atwood Memorial Center Quarry. Student and community veterans will share their stories through photos, video, poetry and other forms of art.
- Trunk-or-Treat at 5-6:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in the South Pay Lot next to Lindgren Childcare Center. Families are invited to bring their children in costume to visit the trunks to collect candy and play games. Student veterans will participate in the event and are open to conversation about their experience in the military.
Veterans’ Voices Month is a month-long series of events that are aimed at connecting veterans within the student population and the surrounding community, with those who have limited understanding of military service.
Minnesota devotes an entire month to honoring veterans. The goal of Veterans’ Voices Month is to bring about a greater understanding of what veterans and servicemen and women have done will be shown through conversation, storytelling, poetry, music and other forms of art.
