PIONEER PRESS —Ellen Keane’s Irish grandmother tried to pray her mother out of being a dancer.
It didn’t work. Keane’s mother started dance lessons when she was 13 in Manchester, England. She hoofed it in pantomimes, lavish English shows with song and dance that are usually performed around Christmastime. At age 14, she danced on stages in Manchester and Liverpool.
Three weeks before her 16th birthday, Catherine Philomena “Phil” Mahoney met her future husband and they danced socially three times a week, Keane says.

Keane graduated from St. Cloud State in 1984 with a fine arts degree and “cut her teeth” on teaching with community education classes.
