CareerONE participants are getting hands-on experience with manufacturing and construction technology this July at St. Cloud State University.
Twenty youths participating in the CareerONE summer camp are learning about manufacturing and construction through faculty members from the Department of Environmental and Technological Studies and the Center for Continuing Studies.
The program is run by Career Solutions and provides 14-17 year olds employability skills training by teaching them how to apply for a job and introducing them to different careers through community projects. The program is now in its 20th year and offers special tracks that focus on healthcare, business and technology and a manufacturing and construction.
The students worked with instructors John Holmen and Mark Schroll in the Headley Hall woodshop. By the end of the camp they will earn their Basic CADD Skills certificate and their Introduction to Manufacturing certificate.
The students are working with Autodesk Inventor to learn the design process. Their final project in the camp is designing cell phone holder in Autodesk and then creating a 3D-printed prototype of their holder.
They are getting hands-on experience with equipment and are exploring related careers with an introduction to a welding simulator, CNC plasma cutters, 3D printers, laser engravers and CNC routers.
 On July 19-20, campers from all the CareerONE tracks came to tour St. Cloud State and participate in a community project with the Buildings and Grounds crew to plant trees. Grounds Supervisor Barron Nixon demonstrated and explained the proper techniques for digging the hole, handling the tree, mulching and more, while the Undergraduate Admissions team provided tours.
