St. Cloud State University welcomed Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon to campus on Sept. 18 to speak to students, faculty, staff and the community about the importance of voting and being civically involved within the state of Minnesota.
Secretary Simon was greeted to campus by SCSU President Robbyn Wacker and other University leadership before speaking in front of a group gathered in the Atwood Memorial Center Cascade Room. Secretary Simon presented to campus about why people should vote, how they can register to vote and what the process is to vote while engaging young voters and expressing to everyone the importance of having their voice heard.
“Every year in Minnesota, there are elections in this state that are either tied or decided by one vote,” Secretary Simon said. “Your vote is your voice, it is your power and you should use that.”
Secretary Simon went on to outline the new laws in place in Minnesota that help citizens during the voting process. He also provided the timeline ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election which includes the Presidential Primary on March 5 and the absentee voting for that primary on Jan. 19.
“In less than 14 months, we are going to be voting in a general election for President of the United States,” Secretary Simon said. “We want to make sure everyone can exercise their rights of expression, their voting rights, and do that safely and in an atmosphere of calm and stability.”
Following his presentation, Secretary Simon opened things up to the crowd in attendance to answer any voting or election-related questions before holding a meet and greet to conclude the visit on campus.
“I want voters to have right information and the accurate information as they go into make a decision next year in 2024,” Secretary Simon said.
