Two visiting Turkish scholars have come together for a showcase of Turkish art in St. Cloud State’s Atwood Memorial Center gallery. A reception was held March 31st for the exhibit, which will be on display until April 19.
The exhibit explores Anatolian women from the individual perspectives of three artists — Fatma Nur Başaran, H. Sinem Şanlı, and Banu H. Gürcüm. Başaran and Şanlı are visiting St. Cloud State as part of a delegation of 18 visiting scholars from Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey.
Together the three artists’ collections form a trilogy for the concept of Anatolian women from ancient times until the 19th century. The technique is silk screen printing, and the material used is special felted wool from the Afyon region.
“Anatolian Woman: Mother Goddess” by Fatma Nur Başaran focuses on Anatolian goddesses.
“Anatolian Woman: Levini’s Women” by H. Sinem Şanlı features Anatolian women who were drawn by the Turkish miniature artist Levni.
“Anatolian Woman: Orientalists’ Women” by Banu H. Gürcüm features Anatolian women photographed by orientalists in the 19th century.
The reception featured live Turkish music.
The exhibit is sponsored jointly by the University Program Board and the College of Liberal Arts.
