The Women’s Center at St. Cloud State University will recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month with a series of events in April.
“Sexual violence is an outcome of a culture that objectifies women,” said Lee LaDue, gender violence prevention coordinator. “To end sexual violence, we need to explore these cultural realities and think about what we can do to change this.”
Events provide a safe space for survivors to discuss the issue and talk about how the community can be involved to prevent sexual violence.
“Creating a world where sexual violence doesn’t occur has to go beyond, ‘I don’t rape therefore I have no responsibility to do anything about the issue.’ That is why the bystander intervention training is so important and taking a personal stand to say, ‘It’s on us, to do something,’” LaDue said.
Studies show that one in four women, and some men, will experience sexual violence during their college years.
The Women’s Center created it’s own “It’s on Us” campaign for St. Cloud State, where students, faculty and staff can take the pledge to help end sexual violence.
