St. Cloud State University is matching the $7,500 grant from the Institution of International Education (IIE) for a total of $15,000 to be awarded to students in the form of $2,500 scholarships.

The awards can be used for tuition, books and travel costs while studying abroad for a semester in Ireland. Preference is given to first-year students at St. Cloud State, which includes both freshmen and students transferring from a two-year institution.
The scholarship grant comes at a time when St. Cloud State has also formed a new partnership with Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland.
Mary Immaculate College specializes in education and liberal arts programs that match well with majors from St. Cloud State’s School of Education and College of Liberal Arts, said Nichole Pazdernik, director of international recruitment, admissions and Education Abroad at St. Cloud State.
The program also works well for other students who have liberal arts elective requirements to fulfill, she added.
Scholarship eligibility
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Enrolled undergraduate.
- 2.5 cumulative GPA.
- Apply for a semester program to Ireland for fall 2015 or spring 2016.
- Preference for Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, Ireland.
- Preference for first-year students.
The scholarships will be for students looking to study abroad in Ireland in fall 2015 or spring 2016. Interested students need to apply to an Ireland institution by Oct. 1. Eligible students will be contacted for an interview by the St. Cloud State nominating committee during October and nominations made to IIE by Nov. 2.
“The IIE Generation Study Abroad Scholarships will give more students — and more underrepresented students — the opportunity to gain international experience, which is one of the most important components of a 21st-century education,” said Allan E. Goodman, IIE president and chief executive officer.
As part of Generation Study Abroad, St. Cloud State is dedicated to doubling the number of students who study abroad by 2019.
St. Cloud State is one of 26 institutions receiving funds to promote study abroad and further diversify the activity. Ten institutions received funds to provide scholarships to study abroad in Ireland, while the remaining 16 schools received grants to promote an initiative to expand study abroad on their campuses.
