Princeton Union-Eagle — It was the spring of 1977 and former governor Elmer Andersen, the publisher of the Union-Eagle who had purchased the two papers a year earlier, asked if I thought it would be a good idea to get a summer intern.
Since I was doing most of the writing for the paper at the time, including news and sports, and carrying out the other editor requirements, I said that I thought it would be a good idea.
Along came Joel Stottrup, a veteran of the U.S. Navy who had just completed his degree at St. Cloud State University.
Joel jumped in with both feet, both in writing and photography, using his considerable skills in the darkroom, as well as reporting, to take some of the load off the editor.
As the end of his internship neared that summer. Publisher Andersen asked if I thought it might be a good idea to hire Joel as a full-time reporter/photographer. I answered that it would be a good idea and the rest is history.
Joel retired last week after 38 years as a reporter and photographer for the Union-Eagle.
