Director of St. Cloud State University’s Women’s Studies program, Beth Berila, has announced the publication of her book “Integrating Mindfulness into Anti-Oppression Pedagogy: Social Justice in Higher Education.”
Her book explains why it is valuable to integrate mindfulness into social justice classrooms in order to help students reflect more deeply on the oppressive beliefs learned from society.
“I hope the book offers useful tips for how to effectively weave together mindfulness practices and social justice teaching so that we can all learn to relate to one another in more compassionate and just ways,” Berila said.
Subjects that she writes about in her book include philosophy of education, moral and values education and multicultural education.
The ideas for the book have been developing for several years, she said.
“Engaging and accessible, this book portrays the vital role of mindfulness for learners at various levels of readiness and introduces a pedagogical approach with the potential to ‘meet students where they are’ and actually change the world—one wholly-supported learner at a time,” said Rhonda Magee, professor of law at the University of San Francisco School of Law in a review of the book.
