SCSU professor earns national award for outstanding contributions to traffic safety

St. Cloud State University professor Mark Lee has received national recognition for winning the Richard Kaywood Memorial Award through the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA).

“Mark actively tries to get people involved in making traffic safety education better, and he is always looking for ways to improve education on a local, statewide or national level,” said Melissa Hanzsek-Brill, Dean of the College of Education and Learning Design. “His leadership is outstanding, and he is very deserving of this honor.”

Interim President Dietz begins academic year with convocation address

Interim President Larry Dietz welcomed faculty and staff to the start of the 2024-25 academic year on Tuesday morning in Ritsche Auditorium, giving his first President’s Convocation Address to kick off a week of faculty/staff development ahead of the first day of classes on Aug. 26. 

“Our work now is to focus on student success,” he added. “Let’s work together with shared values, shared governance and a shared commitment to students, so we can be proud when they walk across the stage as our graduates.”

SCSU alumna named one of America’s best collegiate sportscasters

SCSU alumna Anna Behning has been named a Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA) All-American, which annually recognizes the most outstanding collegiate radio and TV sports broadcasters.

Behning graduated in May with a degree in Mass Communications and was a top-six finisher for the coveted Jim Nantz Award, presented to the top collegiate broadcaster by STAA since 2009.

Huskies Food Pantry moves to Miller Center

St. Cloud State University’s Huskies Food Pantry has made its official move to the James W. Miller Learning Resources Center this week, ensuring a better space for distribution of food for students.

The Huskies Food Pantry had nearly 10,000 total visits during the past academic year, distributing over 119,000 pounds of food to almost 2,300 individual students. Students have continually utilized this important service, prompting a need for a move.

Applied Clinical Research program honored with exclusive accreditation

St. Cloud State University’s Applied Clinical Research (ACR) master’s degree and graduate certificate programs were awarded accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) this month.

They are now one of only three clinical research master’s programs in the United States with this discipline-specific accreditation.

Interim President Dietz joins Mayor’s town hall to focus on collaboration

St. Cloud State University’s Interim President Larry Dietz joined St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis to answer questions from the community on Aug. 6 on the Eastman Hall patio, prioritizing strengthening partnerships between the University and the City of St. Cloud.

“It’s critical that the University and the city are hand-in-hand … there’s a strong desire for collaboration,” Kleis, an SCSU alum, said. “That’s what’s going to help the University and help the city in working together.”

SCSU’s Chief Information Officer named Minnesota ORBIE Award finalist

St. Cloud State University’s Phil Thorson has been named a 2024 Minnesota ORBIE Awards finalist, which annually recognizes Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) who have demonstrated excellence in technology leadership.

Thorson, Vice President for Technology Strategy & CIO at St. Cloud State University (SCSU), was also named an ORBIE finalist in 2022. He is one of six finalists in the Nonprofit/Public Sector category, which covers government, education and nonprofit organizations.

SCSU to host learning and technology summit for Minnesota educators

St. Cloud State University will host the Minnesota Learning Commons (MnLC) 2024 Learning and Technology Summit on Aug. 8, showcasing the University’s commitment to continually support innovative teaching practices.

The summit brings together educators from Minnesota State, the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Education/Pk12 school districts, allowing for valuable idea-sharing in the leadup to the academic year.
