St. Cloud Times — Raise your hand if you know who the president of China is.
When Kathy Johnson asks her classrooms of St. Cloud State University students that, she said, “not one hand goes up.”
Zhang Qian teaches elementary school students in the Sauk Rapids school district. She said those students tell her they are interested in China because “they think it is the farthest country from America.” But their knowledge doesn’t go far beyond the superficial.
The Confucius Institute at St. Cloud State is hoping to change that. Johnson, co-director of the institute, said more than 100 students at SCSU are from China, and the university expects that number to double by fall 2016.
