The program ranged from film music to jazz to contemporary music performed by an unusual combination of instruments and ensembles. The Collective Chamber Ensemble is a new initiative at St. Cloud State that brings together players who would not normally perform together.
On “Minus Nine,” by David Maderia, the strings were joined by marimba and vibraphone. Gershwin’s “Someone to Watch Over Me” combined strings with the jazz ensemble. The concert also featured student soloists Laura Dahl, St. Cloud, on violin; Donte Allen, Brooklyn Park, on piano; Carolyn Ritter, Grand Rapids, on trumpet; and David Thompson, St. Cloud, on English horn.
The concert closed with Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 1.”
“This is the perfect symphony for celebrating spring,” said Director Joel Salvo. “It’s energetic and light.”
