Six broadcasters from St. Cloud State’s student-run radio station 88.1 FM KVSC earned awards, including three top honors, in the 2014 Minnesota Associated Press Broadcasters news contest.
Students competed against professional commercial and non-commercial stations with two or more full-time news and sports staff.
“This is a tremendous achievement for KVSC’s student journalists,” said Jo McMullen-Boyer, station manager.
“When student news and sports journalists win awards in competition with professional newsrooms it speaks to the skills and journalistic practices they are learning and applying at KVSC Radio and are taught in the mass communications program,” McMullen-Boyer said.
Being judged against professional criteria by the Associated Press is a high standard that gives the students confidence needed for their professional careers.
“It builds their radio capital in the field and gives them portfolio content to land their first job after graduation,” she said. “It’s a clear signal to the opportunities (prospective students) too will have when they attend St. Cloud State.”
The awards were presented April 10 at the annual Associated Press Banquet at the Midwest Journalism Conference in Bloomington.
