St. Cloud State University’s once again taking part in the statewide Veterans’ Voices Month initiative with a series of events planned throughout October led by student and community veterans.

The series of events kicks off with a student veteran panel and showing of the documentary “Korengal” Oct. 14 in the Atwood Theatre. The panel discussion starts at 6:30 p.m. with the documentary showing at 7:30 p.m.
“Korengal” picks up where the documentary “Restrepo,” which followed a platoon for one year during the war in Afghanistan. “Korengal” further explores the soldiers’ experiences in the Korengal Valley.
Other events include:
- Veteran Storytellers in the Quarry from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Atwood Memorial Center Quarry. Student and community veterans will share their stories through art, music, poetry and storytelling.
- A documentary showing of “The Strange History of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and a talk by the Telling Project’s Ken Sholes, will share his experiences of being given an early dismissal from the military as a result of his sexuality at 4 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Miller Center Auditorium.
- Trunk-or-Treat at 5 p.m. Oct. 30 in the N parking lot next to Lindgren Childcare Center. Student veterans are teaming up with the Student Parent Organization and Lindgren Childcare Center to put on the event. Student veterans will participate in the event and are open to conversation about their experience in the military.
Veterans’ Voices Month is a month-long series of events that are aimed at connecting veterans within the student population and the surrounding community, with those who have limited understanding of military service.
Minnesota is the first state in the nation to have passed a bill that devotes an entire month to honoring veterans. The goal of Veterans’ Voices Month is to bring about a greater understanding of what veterans and servicemen and women have done will be shown through conversation, storytelling, poetry, music and other forms of art.
