University Chronicle student writers brought home five awards from the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest in January, including one first place award.
Assistant news editor, Sarah Rudlang, Pine River, earned first place in the Best Business Story category for her story about the St. Cloud economy being on the rise despite recent closures.
She wrote… “The Best-Performing Cities project ranked the top 200 largest U.S. metropolitan areas, as well as the companion index that measured the performance of smaller cities. St. Cloud ranked 26 out of 179 small metros, and has been improved from its 2013 numbers.”
Rudlang also took home second place for Best use of Multimedia.

The University Chronicle earned second in General Excellence in both Print Newspaper and Website categories.
Maddie MacFarlane, Dubuque, Iowa, landed third place for women’s hockey photo and was credited for “capturing a key moment in the game,” from the judges.
Entries were submitted from both college and professional publications. St. Cloud State was one of eight colleges and universities to bring home awards.
