Margaret Skudlarek Vos ’72 ’82 and Leo Vos ’75 haven’t let Margaret’s retirement from St. Cloud State University curtail their involvement in their alma mater. The Vos’ recently established the Leo and Margaret Skudlarek Vos Admissions Scholarship, which is an endowed fund of the SCSU Foundation.
Margaret and Leo are lifelong residents of Central Minnesota. Both of their parents, Frank and Adella Skudlarek and Norbert and Mary Vos, encouraged and supported their children’s education after graduating from Holdingford High School. Margaret, the former director of the Atwood Memorial Center, enjoyed a successful career at St. Cloud State, retiring in 2014, and has also received the University Leadership Award from the SCSU Alumni Association in the same year. Leo’s career as a social worker for Mille Lacs County Family Services spanned 34 years until he retired in 2010.
“With careers in public service, we know that investing in education is one of the most important things we can do, not only for our children, but for the benefit of our entire community and our nation,” said Margaret and Leo. “Both our families for generations have believed in and supported education. It is the one thing that can never be taken from you. It is one of the most valued investments one can make for the future. We hope that this scholarship will provide the students from Holdingford High School, amazing opportunities as they pursue careers in either education or social work that St. Cloud State University provided for us. The doors were opened to opportunities that we had never imagined. We will be forever grateful.”
The purpose of this fund is to provide one or more scholarships annually to outstanding students at St. Cloud State. This scholarship continues Margaret’s and Leo’s commitment to higher education and assist graduates of Holdingford High School in their academic pursuits at St. Cloud State. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be enrolled full-time as a new entering freshman or new entering transfer student at St. Cloud State, be a graduate of Holdingford High School, and have demonstrated involvement in high school and/or community activities. Preference is given to applicants who plan to major in Education.
“Margaret and Leo Vos have been very important members of the St. Cloud State community, and we are grateful for their continued support of their alma mater,” said Matt Andrew, Vice President of University Advancement. “This scholarship not only will provide financial support for students, but also recognizes students who have shown previous involvement in their campus and community, which is very important to the Vos’.
