Pine Journal — Some newspaper stories are challenging to write because of the depth of the subject matter. Others are challenging because of limited space. Writing a full-length piece on recent Minnesota Hockey Coaches’ Association inductee Tom McFarlane ’80 was challenging for a completely different reason.
When I got the assignment to write this piece about my longtime friend, I knew I’d have the devil’s own time getting the subject to agree to it.
McFarlane was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame March 4.

McFarlane played his college hockey at St. Cloud State when it was a Division III school and broke into coaching with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League.
