Farewell, Earl. No matter what, I always felt that all of us members of the SCSU community were in very capable and committed hands under your leadership.

President Potter was one of the finest leaders I have ever worked for, worked with, or even know about. I will always love and respect him; and, never forget him.

I was very sorry to hear of Dr. Potter’s death. I had the honor to serve under his leadership his first two years at St. Cloud State. He was an intelligent, thoughtful, warm, inclusive, and brave man. His family and my former colleagues at St. Cloud are in my heart. He will be greatly missed.

Last Monday, June 13, 2016, my good friend, Earl Potter III was prematurely taken from all of us who had the privilege and honor to know him and cherish his acquaintance. He was a leader who fought for the hearts and souls of men and women and getting them to believe in him. I join his family and great friends in grief. Before Paul Harvey said it, it was the metaphor in my little village when a great leader passes to say that a great tree has fallen and has opened up an empty space against the sky. Last Monday, a great tree, Earl Potter III, fell leaving an empty space against the sky, which will be hard to fill. I came to work on campus last Tuesday hoping to see my friend’s red Toyota in its usual parking space. It wasn’t there. Has anybody here seen my old friend Earl? Can you tell me where he’s gone? he freed lotta people but it seems the good they die young. You know I just looked around and he’s gone (Dion), Let us grieve for our Earl, for as Darcie Sims stated, grief is neither a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith, but the price we pay for love. Until we join you, buddy, enjoy being in God’s presence. Tony Akubue

I was saddened to learn that my good friend and mentor, Earl Potter was taken from us last Monday. Earl was a great colleague, friend, fellow veteran — I was Army he was Coast Guard (and he let me know it every time!!), a great leader, and a great visionary in higher education. We in AASCU and the profession of higher education will miss him a lot. Know that he had a great impact not only on St. Cloud State, his community, his region, the State of Minnesota, but also a long and lasting legacy of service , caring and great leadership throughout the USA and the world.

Yes, Steady as she goes my friend — steady as she goes!

        Bill
