New agreements with universities in Japan and Sweden are giving St. Cloud State University students more opportunities to study abroad.
Södertörn University in Sweden and Rikkyo University in Japan are two of the new agreements that allow students to live on campus, take courses in English, and learn the local language.
“We have seen an increased interest in Japan and Scandinavia,” said Peggy Johnson, Associate Director for Education Abroad. “Both of these programs will provide really interesting opportunities for St. Cloud State students.”

Students can apply for the spring semester by Oct. 1 and, for year-long programs for the 2017-18 school year, applications are due March 1. Both programs are open to students with sophomore standing or above and are available to most majors.
Södertörn University is located in Huddinge, Sweden, a part of the Stockholm urban area — just 19 minutes by commuter train from the city center. In Stockholm, students can grab a coffee at one of Stockholm’s sidewalk cafes, stroll through the cobblestone streets and view the Gothic churches or go shopping at one of the independent fashion boutiques.
“Since many of our students have Swedish ancestry, Sweden will offer our students an opportunity to learn about their heritage and explore a region that has similarities to Minnesota, but also significant differences,” Johnson said.
Södertörn University is located in the countryside with many opportunities for bicycling, cross country skiing, ice skating, hiking and other outdoor activities. The university attracts more than 200 exchange students each year and has agreements with 120 universities from Europe and across the globe.
Rikkyo University is located in Tokyo. It offers a Japanese studies in English program where St. Cloud State students will take courses alongside Japanese students and learn about Asian countries and cultures.
The Rikkyo program joins long-standing partnerships in Japan including Daito Bunka University in Tokyo, Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka and Akita National and Akita International universities in Akita.
