Moon festival is Sept. 24

It’s a national holiday in China. It’s observed worldwide by families of the Chinese diaspora. Similar celebrations happen in Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Our Chinese Students and Scholars Association will mark the traditional Moon Festival with “Run Away to the Moon,” 6 p.m. Sept. 24 in Atwood Ballroom.

Tickets are $8 for students and employees, $5 for children four to 10, free for children younger than four and $10 for all others. Purchase tickets at the Chinese Students and Scholars Association kiosk in Atwood Memorial Center.

Moon festivals are timed to the full moon of mid-autumn, a nod to past traditions of moon worship and moon gazing. Themes vary by region and nation, but often center on gathering, thanksgiving and prayer. Many Chinese view the full moon as a symbol of prosperity, happiness and family reunion.

“Run Away to the Moon” will have food and performances, including performances by members of the new Binhai 2+2 finance degree program.

Chinese Students and Scholars Association is advised by Zengjun Peng, professor of mass communications.
