USA Hockey – Since 1977, Team USA had not defeated Russia in an elimination round at the IIHF World Junior Championship.
Most recently, Russia eliminated USA’s under-20 national team in 2016, 2015 and 2014.
Bob Motzko ’89 and his team of mostly NCAA college hockey players flipped that script Jan. 4 in a 4-3 shootout win over Russia that propelled USA into the gold medal game Jan. 5 versus Canada.
St. Cloud State frosh defender Jack Ahcan has played in all six games. Director of hockey operations Matt Chapman is Team USA’s video coach.
Puck drop is 7 p.m. CT on NHL Network. USA has won gold three times in the tournament’s 40-year history.
