Author and community organizer Ilyasah Shabazz is one of five keynote speakers at the Power in Diversity Leadership Conference Jan. 26-28 at St. Cloud State.
Shabazz is the daughter of the late Betty Shabazz, college professor and administrator, and the late Muslim minister and human rights activist Malcolm X.
A New Rochelle, New York, resident, she promotes higher education for at-risk youth, interfaith dialogue to build bridges among cultures and participates on international humanitarian delegations. Visit her website.
In its eighth year, the conference uses speakers, workshops and panel discussions to build leadership and communication skills, promote academic excellence and reinforce education and cultural development — all in the spirit of change.

Advisers, faculty and staff use the conference to share ideas and strategies. This year’s theme is “Social and Emotional Leadership Tools.”
The conference hosts a Diversity Job & Internship Fair, which will have more than 90 business, technical, healthcare, government and human service employers.

Minneapolis poet, writer and educator Sun Yung Shin has authored and edited five books and contributed to another 10. Notably, she is the author of “Skirt Full of Black,” a collection of poems about her experience as a Korean adoptee. Visit her website.
Leadership consultant and author Darryl Bellamy specializes in motivating student leaders. The Charlotte, North Carolina resident is the author of “Waking Up Chase: One Student’s Journey to Awakening His Potential.” Among many things, the book argues young people need a “mindset transition” between high school and college. Community activist Nausheena Hussain is the founder of Reviving the Islamic Sisterhood for Empowerment (RISE), a non-profit that amplifies the voice and power of Muslim women through leadership development, community engagement and philanthropy. Jill Magelssen is a human resource professional, staffing industry veteran and owner of the St. Cloud location of Express Employment Professionals. She has a long record of community involvement, notably organizing the annual Dinner with Santa effort, which brings holiday meals to more than 25 nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
