Brainerd Dispatch — As a probation agent, Shannon Wussow’s job was to monitor those sentenced for domestic violence offenses.
In her new role as executive director of the Mid-Minnesota Women’s Center in Brainerd, Wussow heads a nearly 40-year-old shelter serving the people and pets victimized by violence in the home.
Some have asked Wussow ’02 ’07 what it’s like to have “switched sides” from working with offenders to working with victims, but she rejects that dichotomy.

Wussow, 37, said she’d known for much of her life she wanted to work in criminal justice. A graduate of Little Falls Community High School, Wussow attended St. Cloud State University to major in criminal justice, with the original intention of becoming an attorney. She soon realized that line of work was not the best fit for her, and returned to school to pursue a master’s degree and set her sights on corrections work.
