Witherspoon keeps kids from falling through the cracks

St. Cloud Times — When a group of mostly Somali students walked out of Technical High School in March 2015, St. Cloud school district was thrust into the news.

Protesters said the catalyst for the walkout was two-fold: a social media post depicting a Somali Tech student in a wheelchair and implying she was affiliated with a terrorist organization, and an incident involving fruit being thrown at a Somali student during a culture show the week before.

For Sebastian Witherspoon, who has been with the district for six years, the walkout was a lesson, one that proved the district needed to be more attuned to the daily lives of students and create new forums for communication.

After getting back on track and attending community college at Lake Superior College, Witherspoon has obtained a bachelor’s degree at College of St. Scholastica and a master’s degree and education specialist degree at University of Wisconsin-Superior. He is now in the doctoral program in education administration leadership at St. Cloud State University.
