Labor statistics show area workers in demand

St. Cloud Times — During the height of the recession, job openings in Central Minnesota fell drastically at a time when 19,000 area workers were looking for employment.

In 2009, there were 11.8 unemployed workers for every job opening in the region.

In 2016, that rate dropped to 1.2, creating a scenario that still exists today, where employers are struggling to fill vacancies.

Joan Berning, a field operations regional manager with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, presented these statistics Thursday at a Sauk Rapids Chamber of Commerce meeting at St. Cloud State University.

It was a sobering report on labor market trends for human resource departments, but great news for area job seekers and students entering the workforce.
