Sociology students earn kudos at statewide conference

Frida Alvarez and Rose Hegerle will be honored by the Sociologists of Minnesota for their scholarship at the professional association’s conference Oct. 12-13 at Anoka Ramsey Community College, Coon Rapids.

Alvarez, a graduate student from St. Paul, took second place in the C.W. Mills Poster Competition with “War on Drugs…. The Mexican Nightmare.” She is pursuing a master’s degree in Social Responsibility.

The poster competition is named for C. Wright Mills, Columbia University sociologist and author of books such as “The Power Elite” (1956), a discussion of the shared interests of leaders of the military, corporations and the political establishment.

Hegerle, who hails from Belgrade, Minnesota, earned an honorable mention in the Caroline Rose Student Paper Competition with “Working Class Women in China: More Than Cheap Labor for the World.”

Hegerle is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She is president of Students Organized for Change.

The paper competition is named for Caroline Baer Rose (1913-1975), a University of Minnesota sociologist, author and state legislator.
